Nonprofit of the Month: Interfaith Hospitality Network

Nov 24, 2020, 2:06 PM

Six shelters for men, women, and children in need.

The Hastings Mutual Insurance Company Charitable Foundation recognizes the contributions of nonprofit organizations in the communities we serve. Each month, we’ll honor one of those organizations as our Nonprofit of the Month.

The Interfaith Hospitality Network (IHN) of Springfield provides those in need with a place to stay. There are a half-dozen different programs and shelters in the Springfield, Ohio, area operated by IHN:

  • An emergency shelter for families and single women
  • An emergency shelter for single men
  • Transitional housing
  • Permanent housing for the chronically homeless
  • Permanent housing for families and single men and women
  • Overflow shelter during severe winter weather

Some of the basics many take for granted are supplied by IHN while people are staying at a shelter. It’s not just the food and hygiene items you might expect; they also help with bus passes and gas cards, clothing for work interviews, and even birth certificates or other forms of identification. Those are necessary to be able to move into permanent housing after a person or family leaves an IHN shelter.

Homelessness and poverty have many causes, and IHN staff provide support where they can, including job training and treatment for mental illness. Their methods and resources have been a benefit for those who need assistance. More than 75% of the men and women staying at the emergency shelters in 2019 were able to move into permanent housing within the year.

The Interfaith Hospitality Network is supported by Hastings Mutual and McMann Smoot Riddle Insurance.
