What You Want In Condo Coverage

Aug 24, 2021, 2:24 PM

If you’re moving from a house to a condo, many things are changing. Your insurance carrier doesn’t have to be one of them.

At Hastings Mutual, we offer a lot of coverage for homeowners (most prominently with our appropriately named Homeowners coverage). But a single-family house in a city, suburban, or rural area isn’t the only way to live. People who rent can benefit from Hastings Mutual coverage. So can people who live in a condominium.

Our condo coverage is technically referred to as “unit owners,” because that’s what it is — you’re between a homeowner who is responsible for the entire property, inside and out, and a renter, who is only responsible for their own possessions. So what’s covered? Essentially:

  • The condo building where you reside, including appliances, fixtures, and improvements you have made; and
  • Your possessions inside the condo, like furniture and clothing.

The coverage acts like our other Homeowners coverage, where you are protected from losses in many situations. We’ll also help you pay living expenses if the damage your condo suffers is so severe that you have to move out for a while until repairs are complete.

If you’re in a condo, you’re probably going to be there for many years. You will want insurance coverage, just like in the days when you owned a house and (maybe) rented an apartment.

It will require a little research, though; you’ll need to consult your contract or agreement with your condo association to see what’s covered by it and what you need to cover on your own. Then talk to your local independent insurance agent about how our coverage can help you. If you already have a Hastings Mutual Homeowners policy, that’s great! You’re starting with a good idea of our coverage and what we can do to help protect your possessions.

Our agent partners say part of their work that they enjoy most is building relationships with their customers. If you’ve been a homeowner making the move to a condominium, you can bring that insurance relationship with you as you make the change to another phase of your life.

If you have moved into a condo, what was the biggest change from the house you lived in previously? Let me know in the comments.
