Utility Line Coverage: Staying Safe And Dry (And More!)

Apr 14, 2021, 1:23 PM

Your electrical, gas, water and sewer lines may be underground, but don’t be in the dark about what to do if there’s a leak or a break.

Maybe it starts with a wet spot in the lawn. Once in a while, you walk past and tell yourself you need to take a look at it. The ground gets a little softer as time goes on… until one day there’s no water pressure in your house. The line has burst under your lawn.

It’s time to call a professional service to fix the problem, and to turn to your Hastings Utility Line Expense Coverage, sometimes called service line coverage.

The average American uses 82 gallons of water per day. All that water for cooking, showers, and more comes to your house through your water line. If that line isn’t in working condition, you’ll have to stop by a neighbor’s house or purchase bottled water — inconvenient at best.

And if it’s your electric line or gas line, not your water line, that’s down? You can’t find a substitute for that resource anywhere.

Expenses covered

Our coverage helps pay the expenses of repairs on these lines:

  • Communication line
  • Electric line
  • Gas line
  • Sewer line*
  • Steam line
  • Water line*

* With municipal connection only. Wells and septic are excluded.

Leaks and line damage can be caused by many things, including tree roots, mechanical failure, construction accidents, and simple wear and tear. Our coverage applies to the lines on your property from your house to the point where your city or township takes responsibility for utility lines.

Note that this coverage is for the lines buried underground. Your Homeowners policy helps if there’s a burst pipe or damaged line inside your house.

What do you do if there’s damage?

First, do what you need to do to stay safe. Keep away from any exposed damage and don’t try to dig out a buried line yourself.

Next, contact your local independent insurance agent and let them know that you’re having a problem with a utility line. We’ll get the process started for you to make sure you’re appropriately compensated for repairs and other losses because of the damage. Every situation is different, but if we agree to pay for the replacement of your possessions, it’s just that: a replacement for what you already owned.

Then, reach out to a contractor to schedule any actual repair. Look for a reputable contractor for an estimate and a walk-through of the repair process. Discuss what needs to be done and schedule it for a time that works for you.

It may take a while for an insurance claim for damage related to a utility line to be complete. But reliable coverage with Hastings means you will be able to get your water, gas, electricity, or other service back up and running as soon as it can.
